One Step More: A Clean, Confident Sans Serif for Real Branding Work

It was one of those quiet Tuesday mornings—coffee brewed, brand board open in Figma, and a new local ceramic studio waiting for its visual identity. No flashy brief, no vague “make it feel *authentic*” notes—just handmade mugs, quiet confidence, and a desire to stand out without shouting. I opened the font folder and dropped in One Step More. Not as a last resort. Not as a placeholder. As a deliberate choice.

Right away, the pairing clicked: the Modern Sans headline font with its subtle geometric warmth, and the clean, slightly taller companion sans for body text. It’s not minimalist to the point of coldness—there’s a gentle rhythm in the letterforms, a softness in the terminals, just enough personality to avoid blending into the background. The x-height is generous, the spacing feels intuitive, and the weights (Light, Regular, Medium, Bold) give real flexibility—not just for hierarchy, but for texture.

I started small: testing One Step More on the logo lockup. The studio’s name is two words, modest in length. In Bold, it held presence without heaviness. In Medium, it felt approachable—like the artist greeting you at the door. No forced contrast, no awkward kerning fixes. Just clarity. That’s rare. Especially when you’re balancing legibility on a tiny business card *and* impact on a 48″ wall banner.

Then came packaging. Their small-batch glaze labels needed something that could live beside hand-drawn icons and raw clay textures—something modern but not sterile. One Step More’s Regular weight worked beautifully for ingredient lists and care instructions: open counters, consistent stroke contrast, and excellent readability at 8–10 pt. No squinting. No second-guessing. And because it’s a true font *duo*, not just a single family with extra weights, the shift between headline and caption felt intentional—not like scaling down, but like shifting tone.

Social media graphics were next. Instagram posts, Stories, even the occasional carousel—One Step More handled them all without needing constant manual adjustment. Its generous letter spacing means headlines breathe, even over busy photo backgrounds. And unlike some ultra-tight modern sans serifs, it doesn’t collapse or blur at smaller screen sizes. On mobile, the Medium weight reads cleanly in hero text; the Light weight adds delicate emphasis to quotes or taglines without vanishing.

What surprised me most? How well it paired with a quiet serif—specifically, a low-contrast, warm-textured serif like Cormorant Garamond or Literata. Not for contrast’s sake, but for balance. One Step More handles the functional roles—names, dates, descriptors—with calm authority, while the serif steps in for storytelling moments: studio notes, product origin stories, seasonal updates. It’s a pairing that feels human, not algorithmic.

And yes—I tested it everywhere: printed on uncoated paper, laser-printed on kraft stickers, rendered in Safari and Chrome, even exported as SVG for their simple website header. No rendering hiccups. No missing glyphs. The OpenType features include standard ligatures and discretionary alternates (subtle, tasteful—no flourishes), plus full Latin-1 support. For a small studio launching across English and French markets, that multilingual readiness saved hours of manual substitution.

Here’s what I tell clients now when they ask about typography: One Step More isn’t a “safe” font—it’s a *considered* one. It doesn’t try to be everything. It excels where many modern sans serifs falter: short-form text, mixed-media environments, and systems that need both warmth and precision. It works as a display font (Bold, centered, on a poster), as a logo font (Medium, tight tracking, balanced spacing), and as a supporting typeface (Regular and Light, in editorial layouts or email footers). But it’s not ideal for long-form body copy in dense print—its strength is intentionality, not endurance.

Before locking it into the full brand system, I always do three quick checks: First, I paste real client copy—not lorem ipsum—into a mockup of their most common use case (e.g., a product label or Instagram bio). Second, I export a PDF and zoom to 200% on screen: do curves hold? Do thin strokes disappear? Third, I print a sample on the actual paper stock they’ll use—some fonts lose soul in translation from screen to matte finish. One Step More passed all three, no tweaks needed.

For freelancers and small studios, licensing is practical too: it’s a commercial font with clear usage terms—no murky “personal use only” clauses, no surprise fees for merchandise or web embedding. You get OTF, WOFF2, and EOT files, so integrating it into a lightweight website or Shopify theme is frictionless. And because it’s a duo—not a sprawling 20-weight superfamily—you’re not paying for styles you won’t use. Just clean, capable, contemporary sans serif fonts that serve the work, not the other way around.

Back to that ceramic studio: their launch included a simple A2 poster, matte business cards, ceramic stamp impressions, and an understated website. Every piece felt connected—not because of heavy-handed design rules, but because One Step More gave us a shared voice. Not loud. Not trendy. Just clear, grounded, and quietly confident. Exactly what their work deserved.

If you’re choosing a sans serif for a branding project—whether it’s for a neighborhood café, a slow-fashion label, a creative workshop, or your own portfolio site—give One Step More space to breathe. Try it where you need clarity first, warmth second, and distinction without effort. It won’t solve every design problem—but it makes solving the right ones feel effortless.
